Maui Axis Deer
Maui’s Axis deer, originally native to India, were introduced to the island in the 1950s for hunting purposes. With few natural predators, the deer population quickly thrived, leading to an overpopulation problem. Today, they pose significant challenges to local ecosystems, agricultural lands, and native plant species, as they graze heavily on vegetation, disrupt habitats, and outcompete native wildlife for resources. The overpopulation of Axis deer has become a concern for conservationists and farmers alike, prompting efforts for population control and management.
Luke Olsen Lives on Maui and has access to upcountry hunting grounds where he harvests deer for his and other local families to eat, the hides provided are from these hunts.
